Tae Kwon Do Pattern Tables

Korean Phonetic Writing (han-gul) Pattern names are anglicized from the Korean han gul (native phonetic script). This is an inexact process, because there are multiple methods for converting to the english alphabet, a process called romanization. For the most accurate pronounciation, a native Korean speaker familiar with the pattern(s) in question should be consulted. Learning to read han gul well will also help a great deal with your pronounciation.

Standard Pattern Series

The first table contains patterns that are members of a named series, or known to generally be taught in a series in the kup ranks. Often, these are taught at the kup-levels, however this is not always true. The Pyung An, Chel Gi and Bat Sai series often span kup through dan ranks, or may be taught entirely in dan ranks. Of course, in schools where a pattern series is not "native", that series is likely to be learned in dan ranks (if at all) no matter what level it was actually intended for. Learning such as this is a rounding-out of a student, rather than basic training.

Black Belt Pattern Series

Dan (Hanja) The second table contains patterns that are generally taught in dan ranks, and also are generally not part of a named series. The dan ranks associated with the patterns as shown here are of neccesity aproximate - some schools will vary the treatment. A typical example is the teaching of Koreo at 1st kup rather than 1st dan, which is quite common in WTF schools, despite the fact that the WTF standards mandate it be taught at 1 dan. Instructors and masters have considerable leeway in teaching patterns, and like the person who when given an inch, takes a mile, they use that leeway quite freely.

Another little monkey-wrench that can affect what patterns are taught at what level is that some TKD schools use the designation poom instead of dan for students below an arbitrary age. These students generally are treated the same as a first dan (older) student, but there can be differences in the curriculum designed to cater to this arbitrary line.

The attempt has been made to associate the patterns with the rank they are learned in, not required for.
